A significant study out of Denmark has produced some very interesting results regarding atopic dermatitis (eczema) and it's relevance in skin cancer. Published by the American Journal of Clinical Dermatology, the study analysed the association between atopic dermatitis (eczema) and skin cancers in a large cohort (31,330 patients) from 1977 to 2006.

The summary of what they found was the suggestion of reduced risk of malignant melanoma among atopic dermatitis patients, but an increased risk of other skin cancers, including basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). This is good news regarding melanoma, but means individuals with atopic dermatitis must be diligent with their skin checks.

So if you suffer from atopic dermatitis (eczema), please ensure you have your skin regularly examined by a Dermatologist to ensure there is no incidence of BCCs or SCCs.
