1064 (ND Yag) laser

This is one of the more common laser treatments, and is excellent for a variety of applications. The 1064 laser is highly effective for:

  • Venous lakes (are soft, compressible papules generally found on sun-exposed surfaces on the border of the lip, face and ears. They appear dark blue to violet in colour, and can be anywhere from 0.2-1cm in diameter)

  • Larger spider veins of the face (these are likened to mini versions of varicose veins)

  • Melasma (tan or dark skin discoloration that is common, that pregnant women are particularly prone to)

  • Onychomycosis (fungal nail infections)

What to expect during treatment

What to expect from treatments with the 1064 laser will vary depending on the reason you are having the procedure.

This laser doesn’t break the skin, and can be a very quick procedure for treating individual venous lakes.

If you undertake this treatment for fungal nail infections, the time taken will vary depending on the affected areas. In general, to treat all nails, it takes approximately 15 minutes.

What to expect after treatment

The 1064 is a fantastic treatment that doesn’t involve much downtime. If treating venous lakes, you can expect a two to three day recovery period, and for fungal infections of the feet there is no downtime.

If treating venous lakes and spider veins, you will experience some bruising in the target areas. In addition, for large lesions (venous lakes) in many cases will require a second treatment at a separate time to avoid unwanted skin damage.

If used for melasma treatment, there is no discomfort or downtime.

Post-operative care

With this laser treatment, targeted areas can be covered with make up after the procedure.

It’s also best to avoid traumatising the targeted areas during the first week after the procedure. Meaning no harsh exfoliation, scrubbing, excess sun exposure or other such activities. By being diligent with your post-op care, you will achieve highly desirable results from your procedure.

V-beam (pulse dye laser - 595nm)

This laser treatment emits a light wavelength of 595nm, attracting it to oxyhaemoglobin (blood) and melanin (skin pigment).

V-beam is excellent for for treating a variety of conditions including:

  1. Select birthmarks: red birthmarks (port wine stain), hemangiomas (strawberry naevi) and cherry angiomas (campbell de morgan spots).

  2. Other vascular conditions: broken capillaries and rosacea

  3. Skin pigmentation: sun spots, freckles and pigmented birth marks (cafe-au-lait macules)

  4. Reducing redness and size of: stretch marks and scars

  5. Treating some forms of acne.

Treatment

Despite the various reasons you might be having treatment with the V-beam laser, there are some basics to expect.

The procedure doesn’t break the skin, and there is no after care required. In general, the treatment time is quite quick (anywhere between 5 - 20 minutes depending).

If you are having the procedure for large birthmarks and hemangiomas (strawberry naevi), you can expect to have multiple treatments to ensure the desired result is achieved. Usually the number of required treatments can be better estimated after the first few treatments. Small strawberry naevi may only require one treatment. Immediate bruising is normal for vascular treatments.

If the V-beam is targeting hemangiomas (strawberry naevi), keep in mind the treatment is far more effective on younger individuals. These naevi rapidly grow during the early stages of childhood, so best results are achieved in patients as young as possible.

Post-operative care

As indicated above, the V-beam laser doesn't require any after care, unlike other laser treatments. Care should be taken not to stress the treated areas with any cleansing process. Keep the treated area out of sunlight until all the bruising fades. Then protect with a good sunscreen.

You can expect some bruising after treatment, generally lasting 7 to 10 days.

KTP (532nm) laser

The KTP laser is a very effective cosmetic treatment for facial veins and some cases of pigmentation.

This is a great option for a busy lifestyle, as the down-time after treatment is very short - only 24 to 48 hours, compared with up to two weeks for other laser treatments. The trade-off is the effects fade with time. Therefore treatment is generally required every two to three years to maintain the desired effect.

What to expect

As mentioned, there is a short down-time; approximately one to two days.

KTP treatment can take up to 40 minutes (full face). Please call us to make an appointment and we will advise how long it will take depending on the areas.

To avoid unwanted effects in darker skin types, it is possible to trial the treatment on a small area of skin before having a full treatment.

Post-operative care

For the first week after treatment, avoid facial flushing from eating hot food, exercise and excessive alcohol. This will maximise the effect of the KTP. Continue avoiding these things for as long as possible to reduce the re-occurrence of superficial facial veins if this is what you were treating.
